FAQ
How can we help?
Answers about scanning, privacy, and learning with Gloss.
Does Gloss store my images?
No. Gloss reads the words in your image, but does not save or keep a copy of it on our servers. Recent scans stay only on your device so you can open them again without rescanning.
How does spaced repetition work?
Gloss uses an SM-2 spaced repetition algorithm to schedule reviews. After saving a word, it comes back after 1 day. Mark it correct and the next review waits 6 days, then about 2 weeks, then 1 month, then 3 months — the gap grows each time you recall it successfully. Miss it, and the interval resets so you see it more often until it sticks.
What information does Gloss collect?
Gloss collects your account information (email address), your vocabulary and review history, and text detected from pages you choose to scan. Gloss does not include advertising or third-party tracking, and does not sell your personal information. See the full Privacy Policy for details.
How do I delete my account?
Open the Profile tab in the app, scroll to the bottom, and tap Delete account. This permanently removes your account along with all server-stored vocabulary, settings, review progress, and achievements, and clears local scan history on that device.

Privacy Policy
Effective date: May 26, 2026Gloss helps you learn vocabulary from the pages you read. This Privacy Policy explains what information Gloss collects, how it is used, and the choices you have.
Information We Collect
Gloss collects information needed to provide your vocabulary learning account and features.
- Account information: your email address and, if you sign in with Google, account details made available for authentication, such as your name and email address.
- Learning information: saved words, definitions and examples saved with words, review history, mastery progress, streaks, achievements, and daily goal settings.
- Scan information: book page images you choose to capture or select, and text detected from those pages, when you use the scan feature.
- Device-stored information: recent scan images and detected text, onboarding status, and local reminder preferences.
How We Use Information
We use information to create and authenticate your account, recognize text in selected page images, show definitions, save vocabulary, schedule reviews, calculate learning progress, display achievements, manage reminders, provide support, protect the service, and process an account deletion request.
Gloss does not include advertising or third-party tracking features, and we do not sell your personal information.
Scans And OCR
When you scan or select a book page, Gloss resizes the image on your device and sends it through an authenticated Supabase Edge Function to Google Cloud Vision for text recognition. The recognized text and word positions are returned to the app so you can tap words.
Gloss does not save page images in its server database or Supabase Storage. For convenience, your four most recent scan images and their detected text may remain in the app's local storage on your device. You can remove a recent scan in the scan tab. This local history is also cleared when you sign out or delete your account.
Images processed by Google Cloud Vision are handled by Google as a service provider under its applicable terms and privacy practices.
Sharing And Service Providers
We disclose data only as needed to operate Gloss, respond to lawful requests, protect rights and safety, or with your direction. Current service providers and integrations include:
- Supabase, for authentication, database storage, and server functions.
- Google Cloud Vision, for OCR processing of page images you submit.
- FreeDictionaryAPI, for word definition lookups; a word you look up is sent to retrieve its definition.
- Google, if you choose Google sign-in, to complete authentication.
- Apple and Google device services, when you grant app permissions or schedule local notifications through your device.
Retention And Deletion
Your account and learning information are retained while you maintain a Gloss account so that your vocabulary and progress remain available. Recent scan images are kept locally on your device only in a rotating history of up to four scans, unless removed earlier or cleared by the operating system.
You can permanently delete your account in Profile under Delete account. Deleting your account removes your account and associated server-stored vocabulary, settings, review progress, and achievements, and clears local scan history on that device. Some information may be retained only when required for security, legal, or compliance obligations.
Permissions And Choices
Gloss asks for camera or photo library access only when you choose to scan a page or select an image. Notification permission is requested only if you enable a daily reminder. You can change these permissions in your device settings and turn reminders off from within the app.
You can choose not to scan pages, delete individual recent scans, remove saved words, sign out, or delete your account.
Security
Gloss uses authenticated requests and Supabase row-level security intended to restrict account data to its owner. On supported native devices, authentication sessions are stored using secure device storage. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Children's Privacy
Gloss is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information, please contact us so it can be addressed.
Changes To This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as Gloss changes. If we make material changes, we will update the effective date and provide notice where appropriate.
